We’ve all heard of critique groups or critique circles where one or two authors are in the “hot seat” each meeting and everyone else will read and comment on their work. And some might think that’s what weekly author coaching looks like; however, a group author coaching session is different in that time is made for everyone and the concerns aren’t necessarily prose-related, but rather everything else that goes into writing and being an author.

What do group coaching sessions help with?

Group coaching sessions help with the mental, sometimes physical, but more often emotional aspects of being an author. There may be times when an author brings a scene they’re stuck on or questions about a book’s direction, but those questions are often directed at a close group of writers or even social media where the writing community can weigh in. Group coaching is best for the following concerns:

  • feeling overwhelmed or stressed by a launch or book marketing in general
  • feeling as if their writing doesn’t matter or that it is lost amid a sea of other books and genAI
  • unable to find a sense of purpose
  • lack of passion for the craft of writing
  • rediscovering why they fell in love with writing in the first place
  • soothing anxiety, fear, or worry
  • regaining a sense of balance and vision
  • and more

How do group coaching sessions work?

Group coaching sessions are limited to six people to allow the sessions to last no more than 90 minutes. To help make the most of the time and facilitate coaching, I will ask group members to email me what they’d like to work on between three and five days before the session. The sessions are handled over Zoom, and each member receives fifteen minutes. We will spend time working on each person’s concerns and then wrap up. A replay will be available for those who wish. In the event someone cannot make a video meeting, I suggest that they email me as much information beforehand and I will address it on the call during their time.

The hope is that by being in a group with other individuals, that not only will the author be able to receive my thoughts and support, but that others may have additional ideas well. Likewise, if someone else has a concern you are looking for help with, then the coaching session can tackle more than one issue at a time.

Who are group coaching sessions for?

Group coaching sessions are great for those who want to try out author coaching or who are looking for a less expensive way to receive coaching. They are for authors at any stage in their career, and I help authors of all genres.
