[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Instant gratificiation, even for the big things, is what we’ve been taught by social media. We see people doing wonderful things, and we want them too–RIGHT NOW. It’s tough to step back, to see all the little pieces required to put a puzzle together, and actually get there. It takes patience. (oooh, that’s the “p” word in our house) It takes perseverance. (Hey look, another “p” word!) And it takes the ability to let go of the outcome. You’ll get there. And while I could spout platitudes at you like a broken fast food beverage dispenser, the truth is, you know it and I know it. To get anywhere, you’ve got to take the first step.
This is something my mind can get behind. It’s a belief I had to train myself. I want something big–write a full book. Instead of thinking about how many words that is, and if I only write 1000 words a day it’ll still take me months (cue groaning and moaning here), I think about how much closer to my goal is getting with each individual day’s writing progress. A thousand words. Five hundred. Even a hundred. They’re words on the paper, and they get me that much further along to “the end”.
If there was something I could bring to the writing community as a whole, it’s a willingness to embrace small steps. Don’t dismiss them. Don’t undercut your own efforts because they’re “not enough”. Of course they’re enough. (And you’re enough too, if no one has told you that lately.) Small steps get us to our destination. Small steps done consistently get us to our destination faster.
